There is conviction, and then there is this. The Patriots took Jackson Woodard a full 88 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Landing Collins that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get a three-down runner. A clean fit for the roster.
Aireontae Ersery at pick 38 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Alfred Collins slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dylan Fairchild in the 77th overall pick, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Emery Jones Jr. in No. 105 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Oronde Gadsden II in pick No. 145 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
A big swing on Andrew Armstrong at pick No. 219, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson in No. 222 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jackson Woodard at pick 240 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor itch, scratched.
