They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
Reaching for Sinnott left real value on the table behind him. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
The Dial value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get their quarterback of the future, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Tyler Guyton went about where he belonged in the 35th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at pick No. 44, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Roman Wilson at Round 3, Pick 4 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A conviction pick on Bucky Irving at the 77th pick that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
A wild overpay on Ben Sinnott in No. 97, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, James Williams at the 136th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Joe Milton III at pick 137 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid a round early for Roger Rosengarten in the 170th pick, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Julian Pearl in the Round 6 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Michael Barrett in pick No. 212 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They took Omar Speights at par in slot 222, which is nothing to complain about. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Marcellas Dial at No. 229 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
