The Commanders lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. The Commanders paired the rookies with proven help, Malcolm Jenkins leading the way. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Haynes.
Job largely done: tight end settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
JT Tuimoloau at pick 36 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reach for Patrick Paul in the 39th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Chris Braswell at the 71st pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Danny Stutsman at par in Round 3, Pick 37, which is nothing to complain about. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Christian Haynes in slot 107. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on AJ Barner. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
