The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
However the rest shakes out, Ford at that price is a win they earned. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The roster is better shaped than it was, with tight end chief among the fixes.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kool-Aid McKinstry in the Round 2 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good price on Jordan Morgan in slot 40, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Zach Frazier in the 67th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 101 with a little surplus value in Christian Mahogany. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Will Shipley at No. 103 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Fair-plus on Theo Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Javion Cohen was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 6. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taking Jaylan Ford in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
