The Packers put a flag in the ground for Evan Williams, 55 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
That Phillips pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They read the board right and Nate Wiggins was the payoff at pick No. 25. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 41 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Jonathon Brooks at No. 57 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They jumped the gun on Tykee Smith, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They let Malachi Corley come to them and pounced at the 91st pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They liked Cedric Gray enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 26. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Isaiah Davis in slot 168 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, JD Bertrand went about where he belonged in the 203rd overall pick. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Andru Phillips in No. 216, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
J.J. Weaver in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Evan Williams in the 251st pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
