The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Bertrand reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
However the rest shakes out, Smith at that price is a win they earned. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 2 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Nice patience on Troy Fautanu, who had no business lasting to slot 36. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ja'Tavion Sanders in the 40th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 6 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Khyree Jackson at par in No. 103, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tykee Smith at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
Beaux Limmer in pick No. 138 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A conviction pick on Michael Barrett at the 181st overall pick that the board grades a round light. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They went early on JD Bertrand in No. 188, and the value did not follow. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jha'Quan Jackson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
