If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. George Gumbs Jr. at Round 5, Pick 34 is 94 spots clear of where he belonged. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They banked enough surplus on Rivers to cover a lot of smaller sins. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick-by-Pick
The board had cheaper options than Dillon Thieneman at Round 1, Pick 27, and it noticed. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They let Caleb Banks come to them and pounced at slot 58. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They robbed the room for Chandler Rivers here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid sticker price for Dametrious Crownover in the 138th pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cyrus Allen in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Bryce Boettcher at pick 173 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A need, and now a little less of one.
They talked themselves into George Gumbs Jr. at the 174th pick, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
