Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Josh Cameron, the No. 183 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 209th overall pick. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get a centerfielder for the defense. More want than need.
Value with a capital V on Jake Slaughter in the 71st overall pick, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 5 slot with a little surplus value in Malik Benson. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, J'Mari Taylor at slot 187 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Josh Cameron in the 209th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Harrison Wallace III in pick 223, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
