New England Patriots

The Patriots bet the future on Williams. The board says A.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Caleb Williams is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Little to argue with here, and the A says so.

They will need Boyd to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. However the rest shakes out, Rosengarten at that price is a win they earned. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.

For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Caleb Williams · QB · rank 2
In pick No. 3 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 24
They read the board right and Amarius Mims was the payoff at pick 35. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.29 · Pick 61 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 46
A slide stopped in No. 61, with Roman Wilson worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 57
Payton Wilson is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 64
A tidy bit of business in the 76th overall pick, where Kamren Kinchens graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 75
Nice patience on Mike Sainristil, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 28. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 89
Dominick Puni at slot 99 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 110
Leonard Taylor III at the 108th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 124
McKinnley Jackson in Round 4, Pick 29 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Khristian Boyd · DL-EDGE · rank 178
They reached into another round for Khristian Boyd, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.28 · Pick 164 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 183
A wild overpay on Jordan Jefferson in pick No. 164, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 135
Roger Rosengarten at slot 169 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
