The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Powers-Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Getting Jones where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get a cornerstone up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 24th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 1 slot with a little surplus value in Kool-Aid McKinstry. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Cooper Beebe went about where he belonged in the 44th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Payton Wilson at pick 56 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A slide stopped in slot 66, with Xavier Worthy worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Trey Benson in Round 3, Pick 15 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in pick No. 87; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dwight McGlothern in slot 174. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
JD Bertrand at pick 216 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Myles Harden at the 233rd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steal is underselling it; Sheridan Jones at No. 244 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
