You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chargers did exactly that with Jared Wiley in No. 226. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Davis pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
A slide stopped in the 37th pick, with Keon Coleman worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board had Kamari Lassiter higher than pick No. 43, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tyler Guyton slid further than he should have, and pick 65 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at No. 75 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Trey Benson at the Round 3 slot is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Ray Davis at the 142nd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
They let Dylan Laube come to them and pounced at Round 5, Pick 21. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A wild overpay on Omar Speights in No. 183, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Jared Wiley at pick No. 226 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
