Larceny in the 158th pick lands the Dolphins a B, Smith-Wade and all.

Call it larceny. Chau Smith-Wade sat on the board until the 158th overall pick, and the Dolphins did not need to be asked twice. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while quarterback went begging. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Jer'Zhan Newton · DL · rank 13
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 60
They took Malachi Corley at par in slot 55, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 68
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick 94 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Javon Solomon · OLB-EDGE · rank 115
A curious use of the Round 4 slot. Quarterback needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 109
They robbed the room for Will Shipley here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 126
Chau Smith-Wade in pick No. 158 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
R6.1 · Pick 176 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 144
Circle this one: Trevor Keegan at No. 176 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.9 · Pick 184 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 161
Dwight McGlothern in the 184th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R6.23 · Pick 198 · Grayson Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 176
The board fumbled Grayson Murphy all the way to No. 198, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · Trey Knox · TE · rank 223
Trey Knox at pick No. 241 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
