Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Chargers spent No. 226 on Damon Payne Jr., a name the board had a full 181 spots lower. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Mims. A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 5 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value. A real need, handled.
Nice patience on Amarius Mims, who had no business lasting to the 37th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Blake Corum at the 69th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
They reached into another round for Michael Barrett, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They took Drake Nugent at par in No. 142, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Braiden McGregor in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Damon Payne Jr. at No. 226 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
