The Commanders did not so much draft Jordan Magee as overpay for him, 109 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here. The phones were where this weekend was really won. Rosemy-Jacksaint at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The Commanders indulged a want in Solomon while a need in running back stayed open. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 30 they get a wrecking ball inside, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went OLB-EDGE with Javon Solomon while clear needs at running back sat open.
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in slot 40; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No drama and no debate, Cade Stover went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 3. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid up for Dominick Puni at the 78th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached a country mile for Matt Goncalves at the 83rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They talked themselves into Mohamed Kamara at No. 93, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tyler Davis at pick No. 99 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A real head-scratcher, Javon Foster in pick 100 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Justin Eboigbe at Round 4, Pick 12 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A surprising call. With running back still to address, they spent the Round 4 slot on Jordan Magee, a linebacker they were not short of.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ben Sinnott. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kitan Oladapo in the 130th pick, miles early. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Value said wait; Dwight McGlothern in pick 131 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Luke McCaffrey at slot 139 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jordan Travis at the 148th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Tykee Smith a notch or two before his time. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
