You can draft well and still miss the point. The Patriots did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
Collins at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Jackson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
The Dalton Risner pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
They read the board right and Tre Harris was the payoff at the 36th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Alfred Collins at No. 79 is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
