Thirty-one other rooms let Kaleb Elarms-Orr slide, and the Bears were the ones holding the card at the 228th pick. Highway robbery.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The Payton reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Bottom line, they left the weekend a clearly better team, and they earned every bit of it.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get an every-down engine for the run game at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Sonny Styles slid further than he should have, and Round 1, Pick 20 is lovely value for the linebacker. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Makai Lemon in the 33rd overall pick, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Kenyon Sadiq in pick 44 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A safety of that caliber at slot 57 is the definition of value, full stop. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had Lee Hunter higher than pick No. 60, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Logan Jones in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Jalon Kilgore in the 140th pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Zane Durant at No. 179, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a linebacker like Kaleb Elarms-Orr reach the 228th pick and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Patrick Payton at pick No. 242 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
