If confidence were a draft strategy, the Chargers would have aced it. Mycah Pittman at Round 7, Pick 6 is 128 spots clear of where he belonged. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Mitchell value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get a matchup weapon at tight end. A real need, handled.
They talked themselves into Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick 37, and the board did not agree. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A straight-up fair deal on Brenden Rice at Round 3, Pick 5, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Quinyon Mitchell still on the board at pick No. 74. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Roman Wilson at the 96th pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Luke McCaffrey. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Frank Gore Jr. in the 142nd overall pick, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Drake Nugent at pick 145 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They jumped the gun on LaDarius Henderson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Barrett. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They reached a country mile for Mycah Pittman at No. 226, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
