Call it larceny. J.J. McCarthy sat on the board until Round 3, Pick 24, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Nothing gained and nothing lost at the table.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a blindside protector. The biggest hole, addressed.
Chop Robinson at pick 56 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
J.J. McCarthy in the 87th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Mike Sainristil at pick No. 90. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nothing to complain about; Kris Abrams-Draine went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Brandon Coleman at slot 174 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Good price on Omar Speights in Round 6, Pick 37, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Joshua Cephus at the 245th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
