Somebody in the Round 5 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Josh Newton, the No. 122 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
They will need McMahon to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get an anchor for the offensive line, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
They barely believed it either: Laiatu Latu still on the board at No. 41. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Edgerrin Cooper, who had no business lasting to the 58th overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They took Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at par in Round 3, Pick 25, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Trey Benson at pick 91 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Roger Rosengarten at slot 126 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Josh Newton in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Joe Milton III went about where he belonged in the 202nd pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jaylan Ford slipping to the 219th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A reach on Ryan Watts in slot 245; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dylan McMahon in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
