Nobody else had Caden Curry anywhere near the Round 3 slot. The Chiefs did, by 56 spots, and that gap is the whole story. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They banked enough surplus on Washington Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 29 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
A linebacker of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Caden Curry at the 74th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Mike Washington Jr. at pick No. 109 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Beau Stephens at pick 148 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They jumped the gun on Dae'Quan Wright, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Louis Moore slipping to the 176th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Cole Payton is a better player than the 210th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
