Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chiefs were there to profit. Elijah Sarratt, the No. 77 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 148.
The Stukes pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end, quarterback and other spots still on the board. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The cost of the Thomas reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 9 they get a ballhawk on the outside. Need was not the driver here.
In the 29th pick they get an anchor for the defensive front at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
They let Chris Brazzell II come to them and pounced at slot 40. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach for Dani Dennis-Sutton in pick 74; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A want over a need in the 109th overall pick: Treydan Stukes adds a cornerback while tight end, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Elijah Sarratt in No. 148 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr at the Round 5 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Febechi Nwaiwu in Round 5, Pick 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Zavion Thomas a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
