You could see the war room lean forward. Dae'Quan Wright at the Round 6 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
With quarterback, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. The Coogan pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 9 they get a blindside protector. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Somehow Mansoor Delane was still sitting there in No. 29, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Sonny Styles in the 40th pick, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Derrick Moore at slot 74. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A want over a need in the 109th overall pick: Treydan Stukes adds a cornerback while quarterback, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
Nothing to complain about; Malik Benson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr at pick No. 169 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pat Coogan in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They robbed the room for Dae'Quan Wright here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
