If confidence were a draft strategy, the Packers would have aced it. Myles Cole at Round 5, Pick 19 is 42 spots clear of where he belonged. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. That Cooper pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Good price on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in Round 2, Pick 9, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Edgerrin Cooper, who had no business lasting to the 58th overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Max Melton in slot 83. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Trey Benson at pick No. 91 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach for Roger Rosengarten in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Myles Cole in pick No. 155 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Curtis Jacobs at pick 202 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dominique Hampton. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
