Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent No. 138 on Travis Burke, a name most had 35 spots down the list. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
Getting Banks where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
If Dillon Thieneman and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 30 they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value. More want than need.
They let Caleb Banks come to them and pounced at the 58th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Germie Bernard is a better player than Round 3, Pick 11 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Trey Zuhn III in No. 127 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Oscar Delp went about where he belonged in the 133rd pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Travis Burke at pick 138, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy bit of business in the 147th overall pick, where Kaleb Proctor graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Charles Demmings in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Trey Moore in pick No. 155 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reach for Kaleb Elarms-Orr in slot 172; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kobe Baynes at Round 6, Pick 28 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
