Green Bay Packers

The Packers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

Somehow the biggest item on the list survived the weekend. The Packers never addressed edge rusher, and it is the kind of gap that lingers. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

The cost of the Cephus reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Melton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 30
In pick 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 38
A reasonable price with a little left over, T.J. Tampa in the Round 2 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 46
Calen Bullock slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 25 is lovely value for the safety. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 76
Nice patience on Malachi Corley, who had no business lasting to No. 88. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 92
Bucky Irving at pick No. 91 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Max Melton · CB · rank 112
Max Melton is a better player than slot 126 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 173
They took Layden Robinson at par in the 168th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Ethan Driskell · OT · rank 192
They read the board right and Ethan Driskell was the payoff at the 203rd pick. The roster fit checks out.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 213
Jordan Magee at pick 216 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Joshua Cephus · WR · rank 258
They liked Joshua Cephus enough to skip the value, taking him in the 243rd overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 260
A reach for Matthew Jones in Round 7, Pick 31; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
