When a board-topper like Andru Phillips slides to Round 6, Pick 28, you do not overthink it, and the Packers did not. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Thomas has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Bullock pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots still on the board. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kamren Kinchens at Round 2, Pick 9 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A want over a need in pick 57: Calen Bullock adds a safety while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
Ray Davis at No. 88 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Tyler Davis in pick No. 91, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Will Shipley at slot 125 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They talked themselves into LaDarius Henderson at the 135th pick, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 203rd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Omar Speights is a better player than the 217th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Xavier Thomas in pick 219, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Walter Rouse. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
