The Packers went off the board in a big way for Sam Hartman, 51 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They banked enough surplus on Washington to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
Terrion Arnold at Round 1, Pick 25 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in slot 41; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jaden Hicks at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at pick 88, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A premium they did not need to pay, Maason Smith a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
Bucky Irving in the 126th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Sataoa Laumea in Round 5, Pick 33. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into Sam Hartman at slot 202, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They robbed the room for Tahj Washington here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
You do not let a linebacker like JD Bertrand reach the 245th overall pick and blink. They did not. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Circle this one: KT Leveston at pick No. 255 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
