This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jaylin Simpson, the No. 154 name on the board, stolen at pick 203. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Dorlus pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Quinyon Mitchell at pick 25 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They went early on Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 41, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Brandon Dorlus a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bucky Irving. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Mason McCormick at No. 91 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Marist Liufau in Round 4, Pick 26, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
You do not let a safety like Malik Mustapha reach the 168th overall pick and blink. They did not. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Circle this one: Jaylin Simpson at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board had Christian Jones higher than the 216th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Josh Wallace at the 243rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow Kenny Logan Jr. was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 31, and they pounced on premier safety value. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
