It is the swing that defines the weekend: Zach Rice in the 138th overall pick, a good 231 spots before the room expected him. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Johnson. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Olaivavega Ioane in the 58th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A big swing on Kendrick Law at pick 127, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Chris Johnson all the way to No. 133, and they scooped it up. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They talked themselves into Zach Rice at Round 4, Pick 38, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow Jadarian Price was still sitting there in pick No. 139, and they pounced on premier running back value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
