You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Commanders did exactly that with Patrick Payton in No. 7. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.
However the rest shakes out, Williams at that price is a win they earned. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th overall pick they get juice off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid.
They reached a country mile for Drew Shelton at slot 71, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Keaten Wade at the 147th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They did well to land Kaleb Elarms-Orr in pick 187, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They will replay Antonio Williams at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Malik Spencer well ahead of where he belonged. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
