There is reaching, and then there is Mitchell Melton at No. 20. The Cowboys jumped the board by 385 and dared it to prove them wrong.
The Schrauth value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will answer for taking edge rusher early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
If Keldric Faulk and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Keldric Faulk in pick No. 12, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Mitchell Melton adds an edge rusher and leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots untouched.
Demond Claiborne at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached a country mile for Michael Harris at pick 112, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Billy Schrauth at No. 152 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dane Key in the 177th pick, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jamal Haynes well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Jadon Canady went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 2. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
