The tape said wait; the Packers did not. Brandon Coleman went at Round 4, Pick 28, a good 57 picks before the board was ready. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Johnson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a sticky cover corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Chop Robinson at pick 41 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Kingsley Suamataia at No. 58, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Christian Mahogany went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 29. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Cole Bishop at the 98th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They jumped the gun on Jarrian Jones, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They talked themselves into Brandon Coleman at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Khristian Boyd at the 144th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Joe Milton III at Round 5, Pick 33, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Trevin Wallace in No. 202 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board had cheaper options than Dominique Hampton at the 219th pick, and it noticed. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
You do not let a wide receiver like Cornelius Johnson reach slot 220 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They read the board right and Michael Barrett was the payoff at pick No. 245. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Ryan Watts at pick 246 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Kimani Vidal in pick 255, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
