Nobody else had Gerry Bohanon anywhere near Round 6, Pick 34. The Cowboys did, by 226 spots, and that gap is the whole story. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
Landing Taylor that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get a blindside protector at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A safety of that caliber at No. 39 is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Somehow Jalon Walker was still sitting there in slot 44, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Tyler Warren in Round 3, Pick 8, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Savion Williams at the Round 3 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, TreVeyon Henderson at the 76th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quinshon Judkins at No. 112 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Donovan Smith this early at the 117th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Elic Ayomanor at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 148 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nice patience on Hayden Conner, who had no business lasting to the 151st overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Kevin Winston Jr. in pick No. 152 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
You do not let a linebacker like Smael Mondon Jr. reach slot 168 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Lathan Ransom at Round 5, Pick 33 is a fall that decides a draft. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
No edge and no loss on JJ Pegues in slot 173; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Mason Taylor in pick 186 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Cam Skattebo at pick No. 189 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Gerry Bohanon at the 209th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jamon Dumas-Johnson in No. 248 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
