The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Joshua Cephus went at Round 6, Pick 38, a good 43 picks before the board was ready. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 30 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick 32 they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. More want than need.
Zach Frazier in the 46th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They liked Devontez Walker enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 56. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Trey Benson in the 87th pick, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
Christian Mahogany at No. 90 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Matt Goncalves went about where he belonged in the 111th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They read the board right and Luke McCaffrey was the payoff at slot 173. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for Joshua Cephus, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
