The Packers did not so much draft Mason McCormick as overpay for him, 58 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Wiley falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
So much rides on Cooper DeJean that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Edgerrin Cooper in the 41st pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Jaden Hicks at slot 58 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Mason McCormick at No. 88 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Isaac Guerendo. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They jumped the gun on Jarrian Jones, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Garret Greenfield this early at Round 5, Pick 33. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A conviction pick on Nathaniel Watson at the 202nd overall pick that the board grades a round light. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Nice patience on Jared Wiley, who had no business lasting to pick No. 219. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Matt Lee in slot 245, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Blake Watson well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
