The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched James Williams slide 92 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The McClellan pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a blindside protector, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
T'Vondre Sweat in the 56th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, Beaux Limmer in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was still sitting there in Round 3, Pick 32, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jase McClellan this early at slot 132. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Drake Nugent at pick 174 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; James Williams at No. 216 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jordan Whittington in the 233rd overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Khalid Duke at No. 244, and the board is aghast. A minor need, but a need all the same.
