When the story of this class is written, it opens with Cornelius Johnson at the 226th pick, a reach of 132 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. Gore Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Joe Alt went about where he belonged in No. 5. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They did well to land Quinyon Mitchell in pick No. 37, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Blake Corum in pick 69, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Grayson Murphy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nice patience on Frank Gore Jr., who had no business lasting to the 183rd pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 196 with a little surplus value in AJ Barner. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cornelius Johnson at the 226th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
