The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Chargers reached some 128 spots for Mycah Pittman, and value like that does not grow back.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a security blanket over the middle. A clean fit for the roster.
Laiatu Latu in pick No. 37 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Roman Wilson in the Round 3 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Blake Corum. It fills a real need, too.
Blake Fisher at the 99th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on Drake Nugent at Round 4, Pick 5, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Josh Newton in the Round 5 slot, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Joe Milton III in pick No. 145, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on Frank Gore Jr. at pick 165, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Michael Barrett at No. 183 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They reached a country mile for Mycah Pittman at the 226th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
