There is reaching, and then there is Mycah Pittman at pick 226. The Chargers jumped the board by 128 and dared it to prove them wrong. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Newton.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Sedrick Van Pran in Round 2, Pick 5 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Roman Wilson at pick No. 69 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Blake Corum at No. 74 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Josh Newton slid further than he should have, and the 99th overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tykee Smith at pick 105 is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Michael Barrett this early at pick No. 142. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jared Wiley at pick 145 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
J.J. Weaver at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A slide stopped in slot 183, with Frank Gore Jr. worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A big swing on Mycah Pittman at the 226th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
