The Chargers did not so much draft Karsen Barnhart as overpay for him, 72 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The Lloyd value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Ladd McConkey at pick No. 37 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Christian Haynes at pick 69 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Zak Zinter in slot 105 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Beaux Limmer in Round 4, Pick 10 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
A running back of that caliber at the 140th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A quiet steal in pick 181: Jaheim Bell for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
