The Dolphins did not so much draft Eric Gentry as overpay for him, 115 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They banked enough surplus on Slaughter to cover a lot of smaller sins.

It is not that Jackson is a bad player; it is that the Dolphins had louder needs to answer first. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Jeremiyah Love · RB · rank 2
In slot 12 they get a bell-cow for the offense at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.30 · Pick 30 · Emmanuel Pregnon · OG · rank 39
In pick No. 30 they get a building block for the line, even if it was a touch early.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Max Iheanachor · OT · rank 46
No drama and no debate, Max Iheanachor went about where he belonged in No. 47. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 55
Jake Slaughter in pick 75 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
R3.23 · Pick 87 · Devin Moore · CB · rank 90
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Devin Moore. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.26 · Pick 90 · Jacob Rodriguez · LB · rank 73
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jacob Rodriguez at the Round 3 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.28 · Pick 92 · Sam Roush · TE · rank 92
They took Sam Roush at par in the 92nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.30 · Pick 94 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 109
A conviction pick on Nicholas Singleton at the 94th pick that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Eli Raridon · TE · rank 135
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Eli Raridon. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Domani Jackson · CB · rank 174
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots to take Domani Jackson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
R5.11 · Pick 151 · Jeff Caldwell · WR · rank 186
A wild overpay on Jeff Caldwell in slot 151, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.37 · Pick 177 · Logan Taylor · OG · rank 258
Value said wait; Logan Taylor in pick 177 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
R7.11 · Pick 227 · Hykeem Williams · WR · rank 283
They reached a country mile for Hykeem Williams at Round 7, Pick 11, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Eric Gentry · LB · rank 353
This one needs a full-page explanation: Eric Gentry in the Round 7 slot, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
