Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins worked the phones like thieves and earned a A-.

Trades A+
Future A+

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Eric Gentry at the 211th pick, a reach of 142 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.

Landing Golday that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Dolphins clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with quarterback the one that mattered most.

In the end it comes back to Emmanuel Pregnon, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.17 · Pick 49 · Emmanuel Pregnon · OG · rank 39
The board had Emmanuel Pregnon higher than pick 49, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · CJ Allen · LB · rank 31
CJ Allen at No. 63 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 55
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jake Slaughter at slot 69 is the proof. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Emmanuel McNeil-Warren · S · rank 51
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in Round 3, Pick 11, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Christen Miller · DL · rank 56
They robbed the room for Christen Miller here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Eli Stowers · TE · rank 53
Eli Stowers at the Round 3 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.23 · Pick 87 · Jacob Rodriguez · LB · rank 73
They let Jacob Rodriguez come to them and pounced at No. 87. It fills a real need, too.
R3.26 · Pick 90 · Devin Moore · CB · rank 90
No edge and no loss on Devin Moore in the 90th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.30 · Pick 94 · Mike Washington Jr. · RB · rank 75
Somehow Mike Washington Jr. was still sitting there in slot 94, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.33 · Pick 97 · Jake Golday · OLB · rank 59
Taking Jake Golday in pick No. 97 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Kamari Ramsey · S · rank 74
A safety of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R4.18 · Pick 118 · Ted Hurst · WR · rank 85
Ted Hurst in the 118th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Ja'Kobi Lane · WR · rank 98
Ja'Kobi Lane in Round 4, Pick 25 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Tacario Davis · CB · rank 108
Tacario Davis in pick 130 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.11 · Pick 151 · Eli Raridon · TE · rank 135
A slide stopped in pick No. 151, with Eli Raridon worth more than the price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.23 · Pick 163 · Zxavian Harris · DT · rank 154
Zxavian Harris slipping to slot 163 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.28 · Pick 168 · Marlin Klein · TE · rank 157
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Marlin Klein graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Cole Payton · QB · rank 193
Cole Payton at pick 191 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.15 · Pick 196 · Jeff Caldwell · WR · rank 186
Nice patience on Jeff Caldwell, who had no business lasting to the 196th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.24 · Pick 205 · VJ Payne · S · rank 191
VJ Payne in No. 205 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R6.30 · Pick 211 · Eric Gentry · LB · rank 353
Eric Gentry at the 211th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.34 · Pick 215 · Lander Barton · LB · rank 224
A conviction pick on Lander Barton at Round 6, Pick 34 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Owen Heinecke · LB · rank 230
The board had cheaper options than Owen Heinecke at No. 220, and it noticed. The roster fit checks out.
R7.7 · Pick 223 · Marvin Jones Jr. · LB-EDGE · rank 337
Marvin Jones Jr. in pick No. 223 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.11 · Pick 227 · Adam Randall · RB · rank 276
This one needs a full-page explanation: Adam Randall in the Round 7 slot, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
R7.15 · Pick 231 · Joey Aguilar · QB · rank 287
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Joey Aguilar well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.19 · Pick 235 · Isaiah Jatta · OT · rank 239
They paid sticker price for Isaiah Jatta in pick 235, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Nolan Rucci · OT · rank 250
They jumped the gun on Nolan Rucci, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
