The Dolphins bet big and early on Eric Gentry, 106 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They banked enough surplus on Sadiq to cover a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
In the 30th pick they get a building block for the line, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
They barely believed it either: Kenyon Sadiq still on the board at pick 43. It fills a real need, too.
Jake Slaughter at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jacob Rodriguez in No. 87. The roster fit checks out.
The board had Mike Washington Jr. higher than pick No. 91, and the running back fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Markel Bell well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Devin Moore in the 95th pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Drew Allar at pick 123 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A wild overpay on Taylen Green in slot 130, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A premium they did not need to pay, Domani Jackson a notch or two before his time. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Jeff Caldwell at the 171st overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked VJ Payne enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 176. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Owen Heinecke at pick No. 210 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value said wait; Isaiah Jatta in slot 220 says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into Bryce Foster at Round 7, Pick 11, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Logan Taylor this early at the 238th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Eric Gentry at pick 247 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
