Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Dolphins were there to profit. Smael Mondon Jr., the No. 100 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 224. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Griffith has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Malaki Starks in slot 48 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Demetrius Knight Jr. in Round 3, Pick 34 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay TreVeyon Henderson at pick 114 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Barrett Carter at No. 133 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Hayden Conner at pick No. 149 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 154th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Smael Mondon Jr. in the 224th overall pick, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A wild overpay on Thor Griffith in the 231st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Seth McLaughlin in slot 252 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
