It is a puzzling start. The Chiefs had quarterback, running back and other spots to solve and reached instead for Davison Igbinosun, a cornerback, at Round 4, Pick 9. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
If McAlister pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Benson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 9 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 29th overall pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
They paid a round early for Gennings Dunker in slot 40, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked Treydan Stukes enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 84. A minor itch, scratched.
A want over a need in pick No. 109: Davison Igbinosun adds a cornerback while quarterback, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
They paid sticker price for Jack Endries in Round 4, Pick 20, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Beau Stephens in the 148th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value with a capital V on Malik Benson in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr in pick 169 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Eric McAlister at No. 176 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on Zavion Thomas at the Round 6 slot that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
