The Cowboys did not so much draft Gabe Hall as overpay for him, 33 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Jayden Daniels is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off.
Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with cornerback still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In No. 27 they get a blindside protector, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Calen Bullock in pick No. 47 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Cooper Beebe at Round 2, Pick 24 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Audric Estime in pick 87 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
Braelon Allen at Round 4, Pick 24 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Gabe Hall in pick 174 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
De'Corian Clark slid further than he should have, and the Round 6 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A premium they did not need to pay, Carson Steele a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
