There is reaching, and then there is Gabe Hall at pick 125. The Cowboys jumped the board by 93 and dared it to prove them wrong.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. However the rest shakes out, Rice at that price is a win they earned.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a long-term starter on the line, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No drama and no debate, Tyler Guyton went about where he belonged in the 35th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Brenden Rice here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Gabe Hall well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Jaylen Wright in the 186th overall pick, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
