The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Cooper DeJean slide 60 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. The Cowboys indulged a want in Solomon while a need in wide receiver, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a building block for the line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Taking Graham Barton in pick No. 56 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Cooper DeJean still on the board at slot 87. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots open.
They will replay Tommy Eichenberg at pick 164 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Justin Eboigbe in the 174th pick, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A tidy bit of business in No. 216, where Rasheen Ali graded well above the range. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They read the board right and Javontae Jean-Baptiste was the payoff at the Round 7 slot. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
JD Bertrand at pick 239 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Cedric Johnson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
