The Packers spent real capital to be 30 picks early on Matthew Jones, and the board is going to hold them to it. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Gray pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, tight end and other spots still on the board.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Kalen King at pick 41 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach on Javon Bullard in the 57th overall pick; the board had better options right there. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A straight-up fair deal on Marist Liufau at the 88th pick, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
No drama and no debate, Bucky Irving went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 28. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Javon Foster in pick No. 125, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cedric Gray at linebacker with edge rusher, tight end and other spots open.
Value said wait; Matthew Jones in pick No. 203 says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Taulia Tagovailoa at the 217th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
