Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jake Slaughter got past him. The Bears do not have to explain a thing at No. 89. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Every board in the league had Banks lower, and that gap is the story. Interior defensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a wrecking ball inside, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, A.J. Haulcy at No. 60. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Josiah Trotter at pick No. 62 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jake Slaughter in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Treydan Stukes at slot 108 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for J.C. Davis in Round 4, Pick 29, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No edge and no loss on Fa'alili Fa'amoe in the 239th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Trey Zuhn III in pick 241 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
